Project: Agroecological Development and Cafeteria-School in the Cultural Centre

Food consumption is not only a biological necessity, evolves cultural elements that are part of all production stages. The term “culture” is derived from “cultivate”. What we plant and eat is associated to our experiences and collective living. Food is not only nutrition; it is life, relations and respect to nature and to the effort of all that took part in the process, from agriculture to final preparation of food. Our object is to form local population from Santo Aleixo and all that show interest in agroecological production, in the processing and commercial techniques of food produced in Magé region (Rio Metropolitan Area), including nature protection and manager work. The cafeteria-school is being built at CCEEWAME and will be named “Meliponia´s Garden” as a tribute to the tropical plants located in our garden, but also our native stingless bees that constantly visit and reproduce in our special mandala. All technically supervised by Rio´s Meliponia´s Association - Associação dos Meliponicultores do Rio de Janeiro (AME -RIO).

Shop and cafeteria are extremely important for the commercialization of local products and to avoid all type of waste from exceeding production. Agroecological development is Santo Aleixo´s main potentiality and Rio´s Metropolitan Area market imports most of food consumption from other states, that could be produced in our local rural territory, incremented by rural tourism. With our Project we can improve our agricultural area with greenhouses and fish production. Some of the equipment we need are kitchen utensils and agricultural tools.

In our Agroecological Research and Production Area (APPA) we will install greenhouses: the first for fish and sweet water shrimps’ production; the second for Atlantic Rainforest seedlings for agroforest activities: native fruits and the third for vegetables such as tomatoes, bell pepper, eggplant. Our object is to promote agroecological activities, teaching production techniques and management. APPA is already a reference in EDAMAME soybeans research, an organic type of soyabean that will benefit small producers and has great nutritive value for the consumer, it can be eaten fresh or with simple processing methods. We also develop research with mushrooms, mushroom substrates and soil mineralization. Our volunteers are agronomists, agronomy teachers, geographers.
